Around the Village in Photos: May 7 - 13, 2015

It was a Very busy week at my house with my daughter graduating from college, the Children's Garden Program starting at the library, and lots to plan and plant in my garden. The maple trees are dropping their seeds, hundreds upon thousands of them. Formally called samaras, but informally called helicopters, whirligigs, and polynoses, they are twirling and flying everywhere. Try catching one before it hits the ground or separate the two seeds and split the end of one open. The inside will be sticky and you can press it on your nose. Why? Because it's fun! Beware Poison Ivy is out and about. Leaves of three, let it be!

Around the Village in Photos: April 30 - May 6, 2015 Warblers, Woodpeckers, and Wildflowers

This week brought warblers, songbirds, and hummingbirds our way. With much warmer days, trees and shrubs leafed-out, wildflowers dutifully bloomed and woodpeckers woke us up early. I've seen people looking up in trees to see who is doing all that drumming. It is not the very large Pileated Woodpecker but the small Downy. Both the male and female drum, sounding like a drummer on a drum pad playing Loudly. They are trying to attract a mate. When they are excavating a hole they sound much softer. I do hope they find each other ASAP so I can sleep a little later.
